The Season of Lent

February 19, 2026 by Andy Croel

Lent is a season of forty days (excluding Sundays) which begins on Ash Wednesday and leads up to Easter Sunday.  Lent is a season of preparation for Easter and has traditionally been a time of prayer, fasting, and preparation for the Church. As we observe Lent and practice spiritual disciplines, the church has found that God meets us in powerful ways.

This Lenten season we will be looking at several of the “I Am” statements of Jesus in the Gospel of John.
February 22 – I Am the true vine (John 15:1-11)
March 1 – I Am the good shepherd (John 10:1-21)
March 8 – I Am the bread of life (John 6:22-71)
March 15 – I Am the light of the world (John 9:1-41)
March 22 – I Am the resurrection and the life (John 11:1-44)
March 29 – I Am the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:1-14)

If you want to learn more about fasting – there is information here.
Our church staff are reading the daily devotional “Jesus Asking” by JD Walt, you can listen to the daily podcast “The Wake up Call” that will cover the book, if you want to follow along.
If you do not listen to podcasts – you can sign up here and receive a daily email with the same reading.

Another book that has been helpful is called “UnOffendable” by Brant Hansen. It addresses anger, and we live in an anger saturated culture. Hansen’s argument is that by giving up the right to be offended, we are set free. The book is helpful in sorting out what we want to cultivate in our hearts. The link to the book is above, but you can also get it on audiobook.

Join us for our Holy Week worship services!

Holy Week is the highest week in our church calendar year as we remember and celebrate the very events at the heart of our Christian faith.

April 2 @6:15 – Maundy Thursday meal and worship.  We gather at 6:15 for a meal together and to share communion. Following that we have a time of worship which includes a foot washing service.

April 3 @ 7:00 – Tenebrae is our Good Friday service.  A Tenebrae is a worship time where the Passion story is read hymns are sung and the sanctuary is gradually darkened and stripped in order to commemorate the death of our Lord.

April 4 @ 7:00 – Holy Saturday Vigil is our Saturday evening worship time where we wait vigil for the news of the resurrection.  During this service we have baptisms, receiving new members, and communion.

April 5 @ 8:30 & 11:00 – Easter Sunday Worship Join us on Easter Sunday as we celebrate and proclaim the resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ.

Where Are You Located?
We are on the corner of Parks Road and DeWitt Road,
a few miles southeast of Saint Johns, Michigan.

Our Address is:

How Do I Join the Church?
Pastor Andy leads a membership class twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall. Sign-ups are available just outside the sanctuary prior to the beginning of membership classes. Membership class lasts for 5 weeks and in it we cover the book, “Key United Methodist Beliefs.” If you have any other questions on membership, feel free to contact us.

Baptism
We typically have two times during the year when we baptize: once on All Saint’s Sunday (the first Sunday of November) and the other on Holy Saturday (the Saturday before Easter Sunday). Prior to baptism, those being baptized will meet with the Pastor. If you have been baptized in another Christian denomination, then you have already received a Christian baptism.
